Writers working on a screenplay, stage play, teleplay, radio play, and/or an audio drama are accepted at Byrdcliffe in this category for the May through September AIR season. Playwrights are typically given work space in White Pines, the magnificent and quiet original home of Byrdcliffe’s founders. A small number of live/work accomodations are also available. At the heart of the colony is the Byrdcliffe Theater, which seats 100 and is fully equipped with a light board and sound system. Residents are welcome to stage productions here if the Theater is not in use by another theater company.
Individual artists participating in Byrdcliffe's Artist-in-Residence program are asked to pay a subsidized fee of $700 for the residency which covers private studio access and a private bedroom in a shared building within a 250-acre mountain campus. There are also two live/work spaces available for writers. You may select your accommodation preferences on the application.
Support for playwrights is made possible through Byrdcliffe restricted funds, including the Bernard and Shirley Handel Playwright Fellowship. To be considered for a fellowship, artists must fill out and submit the required financial information in the application.
In addition to basic information and preferences, you will be asked to supply the following materials during your AIR application:
-3 statements, each under 200 words (one paragraph): Bio Statement, Goals, and Approach to Communal Living
-A current resume or CV
-Names and contact information for two references
-If applying for financial aid, the first two pages of your most recent tax return
-1-2 work samples: PDFs up to 10 MB maximum each and/or up to 40 pages of a play, script, or treatment.
