Byrdcliffe offers two private live/work spaces as part of it's Monthly AiR Program: the Forge and Varenka. Visual artists, writers, musicians, craftspeople, and a broad variety of other disciplines are invited to apply. The Forge is larger and reserved exclusively for couples. Varenka is smaller and generally more suitable for individuals, however equally welcomes any couple who feels confident the space meets their needs. Please note that Byrdcliffe is regretfully unable to accommodate children at this time and that all fires, candles, incense, and other flames are prohibited.
Varenka is a simple 716 square foot Arts & Crafts style building constructed in 1903 on our 250-acre mountain campus. It allows artists to work in solitude, but is in close proximity to the other communal residency buildings and visual art studios. Varenka artists are included in all of the optional programming of the 4-week residencies housed in the Villetta Inn and Eastover.
Artists are asked to pay a subsidized fee of $1200 for the residency in Varenka which covers the private live/work space including utilities and programming. Byrdcliffe offers financial aid opportunities to participants based on a combination of need and merit. To be considered for a fellowship, artists must submit the financial information requested in the application and attach a PDF of the first two pages of their most recent tax return to the File Upload section. Applicants will only be asked for financial information in order to qualify for funding.
In addition to basic information and preferences, you will be asked to supply the following materials during your AIR application:
-Work samples whose requirements vary by discipline
-3 statements, each under 200 words (one paragraph): Bio Statement, Goals, and Approach to Community
-A current resume or CV
-Names and contact information for two references
-If applying for financial aid, the first two pages of your most recent tax return
-If applying as a couple, the 2nd artist will be asked to submit similar materials during the application
