Byrdcliffe offers two private live/work spaces as part of it's Monthly AiR Program: the Forge and Varenka. The Forge is larger and reserved exclusively for couples. Varenka is smaller and generally more suitable for individuals, however equally welcomes any couple who feels confident the space meets their needs. Visual artists, writers, musicians, craftspeople, and a broad variety of other disciplines are invited to apply. Regretfully Byrdcliffe is unable to accommodate children at this time. Fires, candles, incense, and other flames are prohibited in all buildings.
The Forge is one of Byrdcliffe’s largest simple Arts & Crafts style buildings constructed in 1903. It welcomes couples to a private 1350 square foot live/work space within our 250-acre mountain campus. At least one member of the couple must be a working artist and artist couples are encouraged to apply. The Forge has an on-site studio space allowing artists to work in solitude but is located in close proximity to other residency buildings. Resident couples are welcome to participate in all programming of the 4-week communal living residencies housed in the Villetta Inn and Eastover.
Artists are asked to pay a subsidized fee of $1600 for the residency in The Forge which covers the private live/work space, utilities, and programming. Byrdcliffe offers financial aid opportunities to participants based on a combination of need and merit. To be considered for a fellowship, artists must submit the financial information requested in the application and attach a PDF of their most recent tax return to the File Upload section for both members of the couple. Applicants will only be asked for financial information in order to qualify for funding.
In addition to basic information and preferences, you will be asked to supply the following materials during your AIR application:
-Work samples whose requirements vary by discipline
-3 statements, each under 200 words (one paragraph): Bio Statement, Goals, and Approach to Community
-A current resume or CV
-Names and contact information for two references
-If applying for financial aid, the first two pages of your most recent tax return
-The 2nd individual will be asked to submit similar materials during the application
